Family Counseling Services has started an Asian Helpline to take social service calls from people who speak Mandarin and Cantonese.
On Monday, the nonprofit counseling center, which serves the western San Gabriel Valley, announced the new service. Nine volunteers will answer calls on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, said spokesman John Sam. The volunteers will refer callers to psychologists or agencies.
Peter Chan, president of Family Counseling Services’ board of directors, said the center is looking for more volunteers and is beginning a fund-raising campaign to help pay for the line.
