Who’s on The Bench at La Quinta?

The scenario started after last season, when Russ Davis, who guided the Woodbridge girls’ basketball team to the Southern Section Division II-A title last year, agreed to coach La Quinta this season as a walk-on and worked with the team over the summer.

Davis, 29, coached the Woodbridge varsity last season while Eric Bangs was on sabbatical. He assisted Bangs the previous six seasons and was involved with the Warrior boys’ and girls’ basketball programs for nine years.

But Davis said Wednesday that he instead will coach at Estancia, replacing Lisa McNamee, who has left the post to become an assistant volunteer coach at Stanford.

The primary problem, Davis said, was timing. Davis said he got a new job after committing to take over the Aztec program and his work schedule interfered with the 5:30 p.m. starting time for Garden Grove League girls’ basketball games.

The Estancia games in the Pacific Coast League don’t start until 7 p.m.; so when McNamee resigned, Davis decided to coach the Eagles.

La Quinta, meanwhile, has found someone to replace Davis, who replaced Julie Hanks, now the head women’s coach at Phoenix Community College.

The new Aztec coach is Alan Dolensky, a former standout guard-forward at Bolsa Grande High who also played for the University of New Mexico and professionally in Europe and Israel. Dolensky is now a business and mathematics teacher at La Quinta.
