Six World War II artillery shells were discovered buried in a county sand pit in Campo, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

The first shell was found about 9 a.m. Friday by a county road maintenance worker. The Sheriff’s Department responded, and, when Deputy Myron Porter found a second buried shell, the department’s bomb squad was called.

The ordnance was identified as 90-millimeter artillery shells, which probably came from a former artillery range in the Anza-Borrego State Desert Park in Imperial County.

The six shells will be turned over to an Army ordnance detachment at Ft. Rosecrans for disposal, the sheriff’s spokesman said.
