Avis G. Culliton; Retired Teacher

Avis G. Culliton, who taught in Lancaster elementary schools for more than 20 years, has died at her Palmdale home. She was 64.

Mrs. Culliton died Sunday of complications of heart disease, said her daughter, Cathy Wilson of Palmdale.

Born Avis G. Bruhschwein in Marion, N.D., she attended Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minn., Colorado State College of Education at Greeley and Valley City State University in Valley City, N.D., later receiving her master’s degree from Loma Linda University. She began teaching in Wyoming in 1949 and came to California in 1954 where she started teaching at Cedar School in Lancaster. Mrs. Culliton also taught at Joshua and El Dorado schools. She retired in 1977.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Culliton is survived by her husband of 44 years, Harold (Jack) Culliton of Palmdale; brother, Robert Bruhschwein, of Valley City, N.D.; sisters, Joyce Gerace of Corona, Calif., and Ruth Piehl of St. Louis, Mo.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church, 856 W. Newgrove St. in Lancaster. Halley-Olsen Funeral Chapel in Palmdale is handling the arrangements.

Donations can be made in Mrs. Culliton’s name to the American Heart Assn.
