Wildlife Needs Space
I was gravely troubled to read that the mountain lion was shot when it came back to claim its kill--the Doberman pinscher (“State Officials Defend Killing of Puma,†Aug. 13). I am sorry for the owners, but that is one of the hazards of living in that area.
Despite what we are told, it doesn’t take much to notice the dwindling levels of wildlife. Recently, it was the gnatcatcher, then the graceful heron, and now another mountain lion!
Is it easier to shoot rather than doubt? Are people becoming so materialistic, so selfish and so spoiled that they cannot see that yes, our precious wild creatures need space and the freedom to search for food?
We have also gone through a drought! It is natural instinct to kill when hungry. One cannot blame the mountain lion. Wouldn’t you kill if you were hungry too?
More construction, more people, more traffic and less room for this God-given gift! We need space that must be found for what is left of these wild creatures.
So, to the governor, the developers, the congressmen, the senators and the residents of Southern California: What needs to be done to gain your attention?
