Bonita’s Bowman Leads Women’s City Amateur

After 36 holes, Bonita’s Elizabeth Bowman continued to lead the championship flight of the Women’s City Amateur Golf Tournament on Tuesday.
Bowman, a Bonita High graduate and UCLA junior-to-be, shot a two-over-par 76 at Torrey Pines North, which gave her a 148 gross. Second-place Mildred Stanley, of Castle Creek Country Club, shot back-to-back 76s, which left her four shots behind Bowman. Deborah Baronofsky (82-81--163) of the San Diego Country Club, is in third.
Today is a day off. Players begin the final round at 7 a.m. Thursday.
TENNIS
Seventh-seeded Gene Carswell of San Diego rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ken Berlin of New York in the second round of the U.S. National Amateur Tennis Championships in Kiamesha Lake, N.Y.
In the women’s quarterfinals, Jacqueline Geller of La Jolla was turned back by top-seeded Kristi Meola of Florham Park, N.J., 6-4, 6-4, at the Concord Resort Hotel.
BASKETBALL
University of San Diego center Dondi Bell was chosen by the Columbus Horizon in the sixth round of Tuesday’s Continental Basketball Assn. draft. He was the 90th selection overall.
SOFTBALL
El Cajon was eliminated from the International Softball Congress World Fastpitch Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, after losing a losers’ bracket game to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 11-2.
