ANAHEIM : Assault Counts Filed in Alleged Slashing
A man who was shot by police last weekend after allegedly slashing a man with a machete was charged Tuesday with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Angel Luis Denza, 41, of Anaheim was charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one of which carries a special enhancement for causing great bodily harm, Deputy Dist. Atty. Jeff Levy said.
Denza remained in critical condition Tuesday in the intensive care unit at UCI Medical Center in Orange, a hospital spokeswoman said. He was taken there Saturday night after being shot three times in the torso by an Anaheim police officer.
Randolph Eugene Woodman, 37, of Anaheim, the man Denza allegedly hit with his machete, was in stable condition Tuesday in the intensive care unit at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, a spokeswoman there said.
Because of Denza’s injuries, no bail or arraignment date has been set for him, Levy said. If convicted, Denza faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, Levy said.
Anaheim police said Denza was smashing car windows at the Vista Park Apartments about 8 p.m. Saturday. While he swung the machete, he began yelling for his wife and children, witnesses told police.
He swung the machete at several of the residents, police said, before coming across Woodman, whom he struck in the head, causing a 6-inch gash.
The unidentified police officer arrived and ordered him to drop the weapon, which he refused to do, police said. The officer shot Denza when he advanced toward her, police said.
