Who’s No. 1? After a week’s absence, once again it’s Monica Seles, who enters this week’s $350,000 Virginia Slims of Los Angeles by regaining her No. 1 place in the rankings, replacing Steffi Graf.
Seles, top seeded and defending champion in the event at Manhattan Country Club, is scheduled to play Tuesday night against the winner of today’s first-round match between Elna Reinach and Clare Wood.
Gabriela Sabatini, seeded second, is scheduled to play Wednesday night against either Patricia Hy or Rosalyn Fairbank-Nideffer.
The top eight seeded players in the tournament, which also includes Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Zina Garrison, receive first-round byes.
Tonight’s featured singles match is No. 34 Mary Pierce, who won her first pro tournament a month ago in Palermo, Italy, against Patricia Tarabini.
