After a week of losing to a trio of American sprinters, Britain’s Linford Christie earned a small measure of revenge Friday.
Christie, beaten in the 100 meters by Leroy Burrell, Carl Lewis and Dennis Mitchell at track meets this week in Sweden and Switzerland, defeated Mitchell by a comfortable margin at Gateshead, England.
Christie, the silver medalist behind Lewis in the 1988 Olympic Games at Seoul, was timed in 10.20 seconds as he won the 100 before a sellout crowd of 11,500. Countryman Michael Rosswess was second in 10.32, followed by Mitchell in 10.33.
Mitchell had defeated Christie three times in eight days entering the race, including the American sweeps at Malmo, Sweden, and Zurich, Switzerland.
American women swept to a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 meters, with Gwen Torrence edging Evelyn Ashford and Sheila Echols.
