Angel Manager Doug Rader said he hasn’t been told his job is in jeopardy, despite the disclosure by Jackie Autry, executive vice president and wife of owner Gene Autry, that club executives have discussed the possibility of firing him.
Asked if he would prefer to have immediate word of his fate, Rader said: “From a courtesy standpoint, I think something ought to be done.”
Asked if he would initiate a discussion with Richard Brown, team president, or Jackie Autry, Rader shook his head. negatively. “Never happen,” he said.
Edmonton’s Fernando Valenzuela (1-2) gave up five runs and eight hits in seven innings as Calgary beat the triple-A Angel team, 10-3, at Edmonton.
Valenzuela struck out 10 in seven innings and walked only one, but five of the eight hits he gave up were for extra bases.
For infielder Chris Cron, recalled from triple-A Edmonton Wednesday, merely being in an Angel uniform was a dream come true. “I’d drive by here--I used to work (at a golf and tennis club) right down the street--and say, ‘Someday, I want to play there,’ ” said Cron, who attended El Dorado High and Rancho Santiago College.
