Northern California Leads Junior Americas Cup
Matt Bettencourt shot a 67 and Joe Acosta Jr. carded a 68 to give the Northern California team the lead Tuesday after one round of the 19th Junior Americas Cup golf tournament at Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee. Northern California had team score of 211, nine strokes ahead of second-place Washington (220).
Southern California, led by Madison High’s Chris Riley (70), enters today’s second round in third at 223. Eldrick “Tiger†Woods, coming off consecutive Junior World and USGA Amateur championships, opened with a 72.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Jamie Shadian and Shondell Robinson each scored 15 points to lead the San Diego Police Athletic League 15-and-under all-star team to a 62-51 victory over the Louisiana state champions and into the round of 16 in the AAU/USA National Tournament in Charleston, W.Va.
BASEBALL
Six former San Diego Mesa College baseball players have committed to four-year schools, led by right-handed pitcher Elliot Richard, who will attend Division II Chico State. Five others have committed to NAIA teams. Second baseman/outfielder Mark Hallisey and shortstop Cesar Guzman will go to Mary Hardin Baylor in Texas, catcher Brett Brown and center fielder Albert Mendiola will attend College of Idaho and left-handed pitcher Sean Gibbs has committed to Baker University in Kansas.
