COUNTY NOTES : Five Locals Advance to Match Play in Girls’ Junior Event

Emilee Klein of Studio City shot a 73 Tuesday for a two-day total of 142 that earned her medalist honors at the USGA Girls’ Junior Championship in Wichita, Kan.

Klein’s total was five strokes better than her nearest competitor, Kacie Myers of Venice, Fla.

Among the players with scores of 160 and better who advance to match play, which begins today, are five from Orange County: Kellee Booth, Coto de Caza (151); Alicia Allison, Santa Ana (153); Sandy Song, Cerritos (156); Susie Park, Buena Park (159), and Eunice Choi, San Clemente (159).

Ben Garner of El Toro shot six-over 77 to take a six-shot lead in the first round in the boys’ 13-14 division of an American Junior Golf Assn. tournament in Bethpage, N.Y. In the boys’ 15-18 division, Ben’s brother, Joe, shot 77 and trails leader Rob Bradley, Milford, N.J., by five shots.

Matt Bettencourt shot a 67 and Joe Acosta Jr. carded a 68 to give the Northern California team the lead after one round of the Junior America’s Cup golf tournament at Carlton Oaks in Santee. Northern California had a team score of 211, nine strokes ahead of second-place Washington (220).

Southern California, led by Madison High’s Chris Riley (70), enters today’s second round in third at 223. Tiger Woods, coming off consecutive Junior World and USGA Amateur championships, opened with a 72.

Joshua Sewell, an outfielder from Trabuco Hills High School, has signed to play baseball next season at Southern California College, Vanguard Coach Charlie Phillips said Tuesday.

Sewell batted .464 for the Mustangs the past season. He was a first-team All-Pacific Coast League selection.
