COUNTYWIDE : Veterans’ Group Is Forbidden to Solicit
A veterans’ charity that has operated throughout Southern California, including Orange County, was ordered Tuesday to stop soliciting for contributions.
A San Bernardino County Superior Court judge issued a preliminary injunction against American National Veterans Inc. that prohibits the group from soliciting.
The state attorney general’s office charges that the group collected more than $1.5 million between June, 1990, and May, 1991, but that little of the money has been used for charitable purposes.
Spokesmen for the group could not be reached for comment.
Authorities say the group, which is incorporated with the state as a charity, has failed to provide financial statements either to state officials or prospective donors.
The group, which uses homeless veterans to solicit, has been widely criticized by traditional veterans’ organizations for its practices.
