The Press : On Gorbachev’s Fishing Trip

Mikhail S. Gorbachev went fishing for money at last week’s Group of Seven economic summit in London but came back with little more than moral support.

The Soviet president had sought billions of dollars in pledges to help foot the bill for free-market reforms.

But the summiteers, from the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, offered little more than technical advice in shifting to a free-market economy and help in entering world markets.

As for cash, they told Gorbachev to come back after some of the reforms have been implemented.
