Disney Seeks Highway Funds
Your article (July 13) concerning the request by the Disney Co. for $395 million in federal highway funds for freeway exits is disturbing. The Disney Co. will be the prime beneficiaries of this project, and its already profitable operations should be more than adequate to pay for its newest venture.
In light of the mounting government deficit, I think that consideration for this expenditure is obscene. Schools have been forced to make drastic cuts and students could profit from $395 million.
If the government has that kind of excess, it should first consider eliminating the “notch†from Social Security payments. The notch allows for Social Security to reduce benefits paid to people born within a four-year period by about $100 a month less than other recipients.
There are many other ways in which the government could benefit taxpayers instead of enriching such a profitable organization.
