SPORTSCOPE : WPVA Tour Moves to Camp Pendleton
The Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. will hold a $40,000 tournament at Camp Pendleton this weekend.
The 32-team field will feature the team of Angela Rock and Karolyn Kirby. They have won eight of 11 tournaments on this year’s WPVA tour, including last week’s Manhattan Beach Open. They defeated Liz Masakayan and Linda Carrillo in a double-final.
Kirby and Rock, from San Diego, have each won a season-high $44,340 in prize money. The team of Gail Castro and Lori Kotas is second with $31,050 each.
Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos won a men’s pro event in Cape Cod, Mass., last weekend. They defeated John Hanley and Mike Whitmarsh, 15-11, for the title.
The men’s tour will compete in Belmar Beach, N.J. this weekend and Manhattan Beach in a $75,000 tournament July 6-7.
The eighth annual Spirit of America 5-K and kiddie runs will be held July 4 at Wilson Park in Torrance starting at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $16 for adults, $6 for children, with registration being held through July 3 at the Torrance YWCA, 2320 W. Carson St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Race day registration will also be held starting at 6:30 a.m. The flat, fast course goes through Wilson Park and downtown Torrance. Proceeds benefit the South Bay Center for Prevention of Child Abuse, the Torrance YWCA, the Southern California Tissue Bank and other local charities.

A three-day soccer clinic for players age 11 to 17 will be held at Palos Verdes High starting on Sunday.
The clinic will feature instruction from U.S. women’s team forward and Palos Verdes resident Carin Jennings and 1988 Olympian and pro player Jim Gabarra. Cost of the clinic is $90. Information: Bruce Myhre at (213) 372-1831.
The Manhattan Beach Track Club is starting race training workouts focusing on 5-K and 10-K races for beginning, intermediate and advanced runners.
Workouts are held at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Mira Costa High track and 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Malaga Cove Plaza. Training runs include trails, sand, street and hills. Information: Dale Frank at (213) 318-5531.
