Philadelphia outfielder Von Hayes broke his right wrist Friday night when hit by a pitch from Cincinnati’s Tom Browning and is out for the rest of the season. Hayes, who in the last week has been rumored going to Cincinnati for infielder Mariano Duncan, was batting in the sixth inning when hit by Browning. Hayes went to first base after he was hit, but was removed and sent to a hospital when the Phillies took the field for the seventh.

Second baseman Marty Barrett cleared waivers after his 20-day rehabilitation period ended and has opted for free agency rather than accepting an assignment to the San Diego Padres’ triple-A team at Las Vegas.

And, like other disgruntled former Padres, he took a shot at Manager Greg Riddoch.

“He tries to come off real friendly and have a family type atmosphere, but I’m working my butt off down here in rehab and I never got one call from him,†Barrett said from Las Vegas.

Riddoch said Barrett didn’t fit into the team’s infield plans. He said Tim Teufel, Paul Faries and Jose Mota all have more versatility in the infield than Barrett.

Riddoch also said the right knee injury Barrett sustained in 1989 while with the Boston Red Sox has limited his effectiveness.
