The San Diego Environmental Health Coalition on Wednesday called upon the San Diego Unified School District to adopt a nontoxic approach to killing pests before school opens in the fall.
At a news conference, the group recommended that the district focus on preventing pest infestations by practical means. The group also asked the district to approve a policy to use the least-toxic product available when chemicals are necessary.
“The school environment should be a place to learn and work and not be poisoned,” said Sharon Taylor, a coalition spokeswoman.
Late Wednesday, School Supt. Tom Payzant had not yet reviewed the environmental group’s recommendations and could not comment.
