Trustees of the Anaheim Union High School District will vote at their next meeting on a plan to offer free meals to youths under age 19 at city parks and schools during the summer.
Anyone under 19 who wants a free, federally funded breakfast or lunch will be served on a first-come, first-served basis beginning June 24, if the program is approved next week.
“We’re just as pleased as (we) can be to have another level of service to offer the community,” said Steve Swaim, city superintendent of community services.
Breakfasts and lunches prepared by the district would be distributed to youths at Audre Plaza, Ponderosa Park, Dale Junior High School and Sycamore Junior High.
District officials have distributed 25,000 English- and Spanish-language information sheets to parents of students in the city’s elementary school district, junior and senior high school district and the Magnolia School District, which serves some families in west Anaheim.
The Anaheim Union High School District has been awarded federal funding for up to 1,400 breakfasts and 2,500 lunches, but may be able to acquire more funds if there is sufficient demand for more free meals.
The program will run weekdays through Aug. 30, except July 4.
