MTV Will Celebrate Its 10th Anniversary--on ABC : Television: This marks the second cooperative effort between the two in recent weeks. The special will air during the November sweeps.
NEW YORK — MTV will produce a prime-time special for ABC celebrating the cable network’s 10th anniversary, MTV executives said Tuesday. The one-hour program is scheduled to air during the November sweeps period.
“The special will be built around performances in concert by four major acts,†said Doug Herzog, senior vice president in charge of programming for MTV Networks. No performers have been signed yet, and he declined to say who MTV is seeking.
The special will include highlights from music videos, footage from concerts and vignettes by young filmmakers.
“We’ll be asking artists what’s the worst and best thing they ever saw on MTV. We want the special not to be weepy and nostalgic but to have an edge,†Herzog said.
MTV, which reaches an estimated 200 million homes worldwide, celebrates its 10th anniversary on Aug. 1.
This is the second alliance in recent weeks between ABC and MTV Networks. Nickelodeon, one of the three cable channels operated by MTV Networks, recently announced an agreement whereby it will produce a comedy series called “Hi, Honey, I’m Home†that will be carried on both cable and ABC this summer.
MTV also has created a pilot for a weekly series on ABC. “We’re waiting to hear about the pilot, but meanwhile, the special gives us a chance to dip our toe into broadcast programming,†the MTV executive said.
