Fines for Exceeding Water Allotments Given Initial OK

BUENA PARK — Residents must cut water consumption or risk being fined under an ordinance given initial approval by the City Council Monday night.
The emergency water-management plan requires all single-family residences to limit water use to 625 gallons per day and apartment dwellers to 325 gallons. All commercial and industrial business establishments must reduce consumption by 5% from current use.
Failure to comply could result in a $25 fine for every gallon used above the homeowner limit.
“It is not something we want to do, it is something we have to do,” Mayor Don Griffin said.
The ordinance was recommended to offset cutbacks by the Metropolitan Water District, city public works official Paul DePietro said.
