Holliday, Banks Taken in Baseball Draft

Two local players learned Tuesday that they had been selected Monday in the major league baseball draft.

The Houston Astros selected Brian Holliday of San Diego State, a right-handed pitcher, in the fourth round, and Tony Banks of Hoover High was taken in the 10th round by the Minnesota Twins.

Holliday, a junior, was 6-3 with a 3.38 earned run average and 88 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings. His best games were a 4-0 shutout of Hawaii near the end of the Western Athletic Conference season and a 12-2 victory over Wyoming in the WAC Tournament.

Banks, a 6-foot-5 outfielder, hit .426 with 31 runs batted in for the Cardinals. Banks must now decide on playing professional baseball or accepting a football scholarship at Utah State.

Only the first round of the three-day draft, which concludes today, is made available to the public. Players are notified by the club that drafted them.
