Monterey Park : Pay Increases Approved

The City Council, over strong objections by two of its members, on Tuesday voted to allow salary increases for the assistant city manager and administrative assistant.
Instead of receiving a flat $64,596 annual salary, Assistant City Manager Susan Chow now can receive up to $78,528 a year, at City Manager Mark Lewis’ discretion. Likewise, Administrative Assistant Beth Fujishige moved from a flat salary of $34,200 to an annual salary of up to $41,580.
Mayor Betty Couch and Councilwoman Marie T. Purvis opposed the changes, saying the council last June decided to keep the salaries at the same level to save money.
But council members Fred Balderrama, Judy Chu and Sam Kiang said it was time to give more money to the two employees, who were hired in September.
