Gov. Wilson on Norplant
Regarding Wilson’s proposal to offer Norplant to any girl or woman who wants it in lieu of educating everyone about all birth control options and sexual responsibility: What hogwash!
We need dollars, and many of them, for quality sex education starting when children are 7 or 8. We need to educate our youth about all the different types of birth control so they can choose the one most appropriate for them.
Norplant also does nothing to teach boys that they are half of the partnership, that they help to make children and if a child is conceived and born, they must bear responsibility.
Of most concern, though, is that Norplant does nothing to stop the spread of AIDS. If Wilson is truly concerned about babies, children and adolescents, he will withdraw his proposal to push Norplant on young girls, and push for more money for early sex education (as well as money for all types of education) and work on making condoms readily available to anyone who wants one.
