5 Inmates Hurt in County Jail Brawl
EL CAJON — San Diego County Sheriff’s Department deputies instituted a lock-down at the El Cajon Detention Facility after a brawl involving as many as 100 inmates, authorities said.
Five prisoners were slightly injured in the fight, which began about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement issued by Deputy Pearl Janulewicz. They were taken to hospitals for treatment, she said.
Officers from the Santee and Alpine sheriff’s stations and the El Cajon Police Department quelled the brawl in a prison housing block, Janulewicz said. Inmates were restricted to their cells Saturday and Sunday while deputies searched the facility for weapons, she said.
The cause of the fight was under investigation. Several inmates said they were stabbed with pencils in the brawl, Sgt. Roy Stamper said.
