Donny Isaak of USC had his run of success stopped in Saturday’s semifinals of the NCAA men’s tennis championships at Athens, Ga., setting up a final matching two players with names more connected to golf: Patricio Arnold from host Georgia and Stanford’s Jared Palmer.
Isaak, ranked 48th nationally, lost to Palmer, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). It was the second time in six days the junior had lost to Palmer, ranked 38th. Isaak earlier lost to Palmer during USC’s semifinal win over Stanford in the team competition.
Arnold continued his string of upsets, ousting third-seeded Alex O’Brien of Stanford, 6-2, 7-5. Friday, Arnold eliminated the tournament’s top seeded player, Conny Falk of Miami (Fla.) and eighth-seeded Byron Black of USC.
In a semifinals doubles match, unseeded Fritz Bissell and Mark Knowles of UCLA lost to top-seeded Palmer and Jonathan Stark, 6-4, 6-4.
