BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Valenzuela Tries 75 Pitches Tonight

Fernando Valenzuela, who will make his first minor league start tonight for the Angels’ Class-A Palm Springs affiliate, said his confidence in his ability enabled him to endure six weeks of suspense after the Dodgers released him.

“I know I can still pitch. My arm feels good, and as long as my arm feels good, I’ll keep trying to pitch,” said Valenzuela, who is scheduled to throw 75 pitches tonight.

Valenzuela also will make two starts for double-A Midland, after which the Angels will evaluate his performance. He said he chose the Angels over other clubs because “the Angels wanted me more.”

Jack Howell said he told the Angels he’s ready to play after recovering from a sprained right wrist. However, he hasn’t been activated off the disabled list. . . . Reliever Scott Bailes is refusing to pay the $450 fine assessed against him by AL President Bobby Brown for hitting Randy Velarde with a pitch at New York last Tuesday. Three Angel players were hit by Yankee pitchers, but no sanctions were imposed. . . . Conditioning coach Jimmie Reese, 86, will have cataract surgery this week. He is expected to be back in uniform for the Angels’ next home stand.
