El Monte : Fireworks Ban on Ballot
Despite last-minute efforts by a fireworks wholesaler to block the measure, the City Council voted unanimously to go ahead with a special municipal election Nov. 5 on banning fireworks.
The ballot measure would prohibit the sale, possession and use of fireworks in the city except by special permit.
Mayor Don McMillen refused to hear arguments from representatives of a fireworks wholesaler at last week’s council meeting. “I don’t even think their letter belongs on our agenda,†he said, referring to correspondence from Patriot Fireworks of Temple City. “We held our public hearing last fall; we decided to put this issue before the public, and that’s what we’re going to do.â€
Also, a public hearing about proposed changes in the city’s General Plan will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the council chambers at City Hall. The hearing will give residents a say in how their neighborhoods will look in the future, said Harold Johanson, director of planning and community development.
