BYU Rips Aztecs in First Round
The San Diego State baseball team was trounced by BYU, 19-1, in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament Thursday in Hawaii.
The Aztecs (39-19) will play the loser of the Hawaii-Wyoming game today.
Steve Dietz went two for two and had SDSU’s only RBI in the fifth inning.
BYU junior, John Wagner, a former Torrey Pines High and MiraCosta Community College player, went two for three with six RBIs, a double, a triple, two sacrifice flys and two walks.
Darren Milne hit a grand slam in BYU’s six-run seventh inning. BYU improved to 35-13.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
After receiving a first-round bye, UC San Diego defeated St. Thomas (Minn), 7-2, to advance to today’s semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championships at Emory University in Atlanta. UCSD will play Mary Washington University (Va.), which defeated Kenyon College (Ohio), 5-4.
TRACK AND FIELD
Fallbrook’s All-American shot putter, Brent Noon, has announced he will attend the University of Georgia in the fall after sitting out this year.
As a senior, Noon led the nation last year with his best mark of 76 feet 2 inches. Noon also set a San Diego Section record in the discus.
San Diego State’s Marla Runyan placed second in the heptathlon with 5,169 points, behind winner Laura Zaugg of BYU with 5,341 at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at SDSU. On the second day of the heptathlon, Runyan placed first in the 800 meters (2:15.47) and third in both the long jump (17-3) and the javelin (92-6).
SDSU’s Matt Inskeep finished third in the decathlon with 6,633 points. Inskeep and BYU’s Steve Bulpit tied for first in the pole vault with 14-9.
The meet will conclude today.
