JERUSALEM : One More Try For Baker
U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker III arrives in Israel tonight for what may be his last attempt to nudge the Arabs and Israelis together after four decades of conflicts.
The Israeli government is skeptical, particularly after Baker failed to win any major concessions from Syria during the weekend. The two sides remain staunchly divided about whether the United Nations should participate in a Middle East peace conference and who should represent the Palestinians in any peace negotiations.
Still, amid a lot of bluster about never trading land for peace, the Israelis are eager enough that someone may be able to get some kind of peace process under way. And if not Baker, then who?
