Aztecs Sweep Air Force Academy
San Diego State swept both games of its Sunday doubleheader against Air Force to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference baseball race.
SDSU (39-17, 15-6) finished percentage points ahead of third-place Brigham Young (16-7) and plays the Cougars Thursday in Honolulu in the first round of the WAC playoffs.
Rick Navarro (7-5) was the winning pitcher in both games. He pitched one inning of relief in the first game, an 8-7 SDSU victory, and started the second, a 7-2 victory.
Brad Gennaro, who homered in the sixth inning of the first game, was driven in by Steve Boucher in the bottom of the seventh for the game-winner.
Air Force is 22-27, 1-20.
SDSU plays host to U.S. International tonight at 7 p.m.
Loyola Marymount scored eight runs in the 13th inning to beat U.S. International, 13-5, in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader. LMU (36-20) won the second, 13-3. Darrin Forster, Mike Murphy and James Gibson homered for USIU (15-30).
SURFING
Carlsbad’s Mike Lambresi finished fourth at the $35,000 Body Glove Huntington Beach Open. Lambresi won $1,400 in the Pro-Am surfing division. Santa Barbara’s Chris Brown was the winner.
Manny Vargas of Imperial Beach was second to Hawaii’s Ben Severson in the bodyboarding division.
MEN’S TENNIS
UC San Diego won five of six singles matches and scored a 6-3 victory over MIT in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championships at Pomona. Chris Belloli and John Cross were winners in straight sets. UCSD plays second-seeded UC Santa Cruz today.
VOLLEYBALL
Tom Grindel of Del Mar and Cathy Jones of Leucadia defeated Cardiff’s Tim Muret and Wendy Lewis, 15-4, to win the co-ed open division of the Jose Cuervo amateur beach volleyball tournament at Capistrano Beach.
