Invitation to a Jazz Session : Radio: KSBR-FM plans a ‘controlled mob scene’ to celebrate its 12th year and thank its listeners.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Dana Point Resort will be bristling with guitars, basses and saxophones this afternoonas KSBR-FM, the contemporary jazz radio station that broadcasts from Saddleback College, throws a party to commemorate its 12th year.

The free event, which also marks the end of the listener-supported station’s annual fund-raising drive, boasts a jam session that will, at different times, include keyboardists Steve Bach and Rob Mullins; saxophonists Brandon Fields and Jeff Kashiwa; guitarists Pat Kelley and Gannon Arnold; fluegelhornist-trumpeter Tony Guerrero; bassists Max Bennett and Luther Hughes, and drummers Lee Venters, Alphonse Mouzon and Evan Stone.

This is the third year that Lucille Hunt of White Light Productions has arranged the entertainment. “I usually donate one of the bands that I manage to appear, but this year none of my full bands were available. So I started calling around, and before long it seemed like everybody wanted to be there,” she said.

Added KSBR program director Terry Wedel: “The whole reason for the event is to give a big thank-you party for our supporters and to show that we appreciate their support. And it’s a great way for us to meet our listeners.”

Wedel is enthusiastic about this year’s lineup, which includes many current or former Orange County residents. “These are all people who are well known to our listeners, people in the forefront of contemporary music,” Wedel said.

Hunt said the three-hour session won’t be the traditional jazz jam. “We’re asking everyone to bring in some original material. Sure, there’ll be some blues and standards, but there’ll be a lot of new music, too. It’s going to be a controlled mob scene.”
