Amnesty for Refusal to Fight in Gulf Urged

Saying it would be a healing act, 18 national Protestant leaders have called on President Bush and Congress to grant amnesty to U.S. military personnel who refused to bear arms in the Persian Gulf conflict for reasons of conscience.
In a Friday letter to the President, members of Congress and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the leaders said they “note with sorrow and great concern” that many military personnel face judicial punishment for “acting on their-deepest convictions.”
