PREP TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS : SUNSET LEAGUE : Brown Wins 3 Events for Huntington Beach, but Marina Wins Title
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Adrian Brown won three events for the Huntington Beach boys’ track team and teammate Scott Urner won two in the Sunset League track championship meet Friday at Huntington Beach High School.
But their performances couldn’t prevent Marina (115) from winning the team title, followed by Huntington Beach with 107 and Edison with 98.
Brown won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and the 110-meter high hurdles with respective times of 39.0 seconds and 14.34 seconds. He also won the long jump with a distance of 22 feet 6 1/2 inches.
Urner won both long distance races with times of 4:25.21 in the 1,600 and 9:54.14 in the 3,200.
Edison’s Brandon Jessie beat Marina’s Mark Malone by a nose in both the 100 (10.8) and the 200 (22.50).
Westminster’s Christian Moore won the 400 in 50.5.
In the girls’ events, Edison’s Shelley Taylor recorded two victories and set a record in the 800 to help the Chargers win the championship with 111 points.
Taylor outdistanced Ocean View’s Christie Engessor with a time of 2:14.18 in the 800. Taylor’s time surpassed the mark of 2:14.3 set in 1983 by Edison’s Leslie Pratt.
Taylor, the national leader in the 1,600, won the event in 5:07.92.
Elinor Tolson of Fountain Valley, the Southern Section’s leader in the 100-meter hurdles, won the event with a time of 14.92. She also won the 300-meter hurdles (46.0) and the 200 (26.27).
