ORANGE — The El Modena boys’ track and field team didn’t lose a Century League dual meet this year, but it took a hefty effort from senior Mike Terry to boost the Vanguards to the league championship Friday night at El Modena High School.
After winning the 200, 400 and 800 meters, Terry anchored El Modena’s mile relay team to victory to give El Modena its third consecutive title. Terry made up 20 yards in his anchor leg of the mile relay, the final event, and passed Foothill for the dramatic victory in 3 minutes 31.5 seconds.
That performance gave El Modena the victory with 142 points. Foothill, second in the mile relay at 3:33.1, was second with 139 and Villa Park was third with 74.
In the girls’ events, Canyon overwhelmed the competition, totaling 411 points for the league title. Canyon’s Ann Liming led a sweep in the 440 with a 1:01.0 clocking, and Glenetta Green won the triple jump (35 feet 1/2-inch) and long jump (17-4 3/4) to lead the Comanches.
But Terry, who hasn’t lost a league track race in two years, was undoubtedly the most outstanding athlete of the meet.
Terry ran 22.3 in the 220, 49.2 in the 440 and 2:00.8 in the 880. He combined with Adam Garcia, Meng Ngoy and Jesse Dunivan for the winning mile relay.
Other multiple winners were El Modena’s Kristina Dahlberg (880, mile); Villa Park’s Alana Palacio (110- and 330-yard hurdles), El Modena’s Brian Valdez (long and triple jump) and Canyon’s Tom Bottiaux (high jump, pole vault).
