Bulgarian Miners Strike for Better Wages, Safety

SOFIA, Bulgaria — Thousands of miners at a lead-zinc mine in Bulgaria went on strike Friday to press their demands for the resignation of the Communist-era management, higher wages and better safety.
A spokesman for the miners in Madan, in the Rodopa mountains south of Sofia, said more than 6,000 of the 11,400 miners stopped work and the others, on a later shift, were expected to follow suit.
