SPORTSCOPE : Former Serra Standout Moses Is Iowa Co-MVP
James Moses, the former Serra High basketball standout, was named the University of Iowa’s co-most valuable player during the team’s award banquet last month.
Moses, a junior guard, shared the award with center Acie Earl. Moses averaged 12 points and scored 78 points in the Hawkeyes’ final four games, including 29 against Illinois and 23 in an NCAA tournament loss to eventual national champion Duke.
As a sophomore, Moses shot 35.6% from the field, but improved to 46.6% last season.
In an all-San Diego final, Lori Kotas and Gail Castro defeated the top-seeded team of Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock, 7-5, in a tiebreaker to win the Women’s Pro Beach Volley Tour event on Sunday at Fresno.
Kirby-Rock defeated Kotas-Castro, 15-7, to force the tiebreaker. Kotas and Castro earned $7,200 and Kirby and Rock $5,400.
Tim Hovland and Kent Steffes of Manhattan Beach defeated Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos, 15-11, to win the $100,000 men’s tournament at Clearwater, Fla. Hovland and Steffes won $50,000.
The women’s tour stops in Phoenix this weekend and the men’s tour is in Sacramento.
F.C. Santos, a San Pedro soccer team for teen-age boys and men under 19 years of age, went 8-0 and won the California Youth Soccer Assn. State Open Cup last weekend in Bakersfield. The team is composed of 17 players from 11 South Bay schools. Joel Lopez (El Camino College) scored two goals and Dave Kaemmerer (Palos Verdes High) and Vince Rodriguez (Narbonne) one each in the 4-1 championship game victory over a club from Simi Valley. The team was coached by Chuck Swanson. Club president is Pat Nave.
