California IN BRIEF : SAN FRANCISCO : Biologist Honored for Saving Dolphins
A biologist who took a job aboard a tuna boat and secretly filmed the slaughter of dolphins was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize along with six others, including a 12-year-old boy who saved a rain forest by raising money to buy it. Research biologist Samuel LaBudde of San Francisco was honored along with six grass-roots environmentalists for the film that forced the world’s tuna canners to produce only “dolphin-safe” products. Philanthropist Richard Goldman and his wife, Rhoda, who established the award in 1989, said they hope the $360,000 prize split among seven environmentalists will inspire others.
