San Diego State Sweeps Stanford

The third-ranked San Diego State men’s volleyball team swept Stanford Saturday night, 15-11, 15-13, 15-10, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Peterson Gym.

Mike Schlegel led San Diego State (17-4, 9-3) with 25 kills, Mike Mattarocci added 19 and Eric Etebari had 16. John Ross had 15 kills and a team-high seven digs for the Aztecs. Dave Goss led the Cardinal (6-10, 4-9) with 28 kills.

BASEBALL

Anthony Sanchez went three for five with an RBI to lead UC San Diego to a 5-4 victory over Iona in the third-place game of the UCSD Invitational. Sanchez finished the tournament with eight hits in 16 at bats. The Tritons’ Steve Nowlan went two for three with two RBIs and Louie Diaz went two for three.

Brent Hansen struck out five and scattered eight hits through 6 1/3 innings to pick up the victory. Ryan Flanagan came on to get the save by throwing 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball.

Division III UCSD improved to 8-14 overall and 3-1 against Division I opponents, including victories over San Diego State and USD.

In the championship game, Cal Baptist defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater, 10-9, in the championship game. Greg Briley of Cal Baptist was named tournament MVP.

USIU (10-23) won a pair of games at home, defeating Southern Utah State, 10-0, and Iona, 12-4.

Against Southern Utah, Mike Whisonant (1-7) pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven for his first victory of the season. Greg Shepard was two for four with three RBIs.

In the second game, USIU’s Darrin Forster went two for three with two RBIs and a home run to lead USIU.

Southern Utah State is 4-19, Iona 4-6.

TENNIS

San Diego State, ranked 25th nationally, lost to Wisconsin, 5-4, at the Irvine Marriot Tournament. SDSU’s Michael Sass defeated Wisconsin’s Joe Deer, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 3 singles and Joe McDonough and Jeff Belloli at No. 2 and No. 5 singles were also winners for the Aztecs (12-5).

Belloli and Dax Peterson, ranked 23rd, defeated Jack Waite and Dan Nabederick, 6-3, 7-5, for SDSU’s only doubles victory. The Aztecs play Northeast Louisiana today at 1.

SOFTBALL

Dana Chaiken went three for four with four RBIs to lead UC San Diego to an 8-1 victory over Sonoma State in the consolation round of the Hayward Tournament.

UCSD’s Kira Reinhart went two for four and Diana Marino allowed just two hits through six innings to pick up her sixth victory. In a later consolation game, Humbolt State defeated UCSD, 4-1. The Tritons fell to 12-6.

San Diego State managed just two runs in 19 innings, but managed to split a doubleheader with visiting Ohio State. The Aztecs lost the first game, 2-0 in 14 innings, and took the second game, 2-1, in a contest shortened by darkness. The Aztecs improved to 13-11-1, Ohio State is 5-15.

TRACK AND FIELD

Juniors Alicia Harasty and Christian Andreasson led the Point Loma Nazarene men and women to big victories in the PLNC Invitational. Harasty accounted for 30 of the PLNC women’s 120 points by winning the javelin and the 100 meter hurdles and finishing second in the long jump and third in the shot put, 100 meters and 200 meters. The Calgary Track Club finished second to PLNC with 76 points.

Andreasson accounted for 28 of the PLNC men’s 97 points with victories in the javelin, triple jump and high jump, a second in the long jump and a fifth in the shot put. Concordia College of Minnesota was second to PLNC with 76 points.

SAILING

After two races of the U.S. Women’s Sailing Championships, the La Jolla team of Isler/Healy is second in the 470’s class. Nancy Haberland of Satellite Beach, Fla. leads the Eurodinghies class and Wendy Thompson of Darien, Ct. leads the Lechner Boards division.

CYCLING

The San Diego State Cycling team scored an easy victory at the SDSU/Pepsi Cycling Class in Jamul. SDSU was paced by victories from Dean Meyer in the Men’s A category, Debra Gunnerson the Women’s A, Malcolm Williamson in the Men’s B and Kevin Vander Ende in the Men’s C.

SDSU also took second and third in the men’s and women’s A races. Collegiate riders from 20 schools in California competed in the road race, held on a course with more than 3,000 feet of climbing per lap. The second race of the Pepsi Classic will be held today on a course next to the SDSU campus.
