Homeless Cannot Be Pushed Under Carpet
This letter is in regard to the article on the House of Yahweh hearing (Times, March 24). I was present on that evening in the council chambers at Lawndale City Hall and I was shocked at the diatribes directed against the center and the homeless.
As an active member of the South Bay Homeless Coalition, I am keenly aware that the House of Yahweh fulfills a definite need in this area. By rejecting the expansion of the center and suggesting relocating the facility to more “suitable” surroundings, the City Council has set a frightening example for other communities to follow.
The homeless cannot be pushed under the carpet. We will never find solutions to homelessness by denial or running away from reality. If we will ever alleviate homelessness, we must begin with our own indifference within society.
