COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Mayo’s Shutout Knocks Oxnard Out of 1st Place
Cuesta College’s Paul Mayo pitched a three-hitter Thursday to beat Oxnard, 3-0, and knock the Condors out of first place in the Western State Conference college baseball standings.
With the win, visiting Cuesta snapped Oxnard’s three-game win streak and put Oxnard a half-game behind conference-leading Canyons, whose game was rained out.
Mayo (5-0), struck out three and walked one. Cuesta, a conference tri-champion last season, is 17-9, 5-3 in conference play.
Oxnard (16-11, 7-2) got doubles from Mike Besser in the third inning and Steve Hernandez in the eighth but could not score.
Juan Hernandez (2-2) pitched his first complete game of the season for Oxnard but took the loss.
In other baseball games:
Glendale 7, Pierce 4--Swain Wukelich hit a three-run home run in the sixth to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 Glendale lead en route to a WSC win.
Carl McFadden had hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to put visiting Pierce ahead, 4-1, but Glendale (12-9, 4-4) battled back to snap the Brahmas’ three-game win streak.
Santa Barbara 13, Ventura 9--Ventura left the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth innings and stranded a total of 13 men in the WSC game at Ventura.
Ventura, which began the season with eight consecutive victories, has lost its past three games.
The teams combined for 10 extra-base hits, and Ventura (16-7, 3-5) used five pitchers. Jason Kernan (3-1) gave up two runs in one-third of an inning and took the loss.
Ventura’s Carlos Rios hit his second home run of the season. Santa Barbara is 11-11, 5-3 in conference play.
L.A. City 6, Mission 0--Visiting Mission managed only three singles and failed to move a runner past second in the Southern California Athletic Conference game.
Nino Romo (2-4) took the loss for Mission (10-13, 2-4). Keith Quigley, who played at Van Nuys High, had two RBIs for L.A. City (10-11, 4-2).
Santa Monica 8, Moorpark 5--Visiting Moorpark banged out 12 hits, but Santa Monica (15-13, 4-4) pulled away with two runs in the seventh of the WSC game. Billy Hall was three for four and Del Marine had a double for Moorpark (9-13, 1-8).
SOFTBALL
Cal Lutheran 9-5, Redlands 6-1--Cal Lutheran remained undefeated with the nonconference sweep at Redlands. Cheryl Aschenbach and Justine Wright each had two hits in the second game. Margie Sievers (6-0) earned the victory for Cal Lutheran (12-0).
In the first game, Leslie Stevens led CLU, pitching a complete game and contributing a double and four RBIs.
