From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A state grant of $860,000 was approved to help San Diego pay for the treatment and disposal of sewage flows entering U.S. territory from Tijuana. The state Water Resources Control Board approved the grant in response to a request from Gov. Pete Wilson, who declared a state of emergency in San Diego County last Friday because of the contamination caused by Tijuana’s overflow sewage. Sewage overflows have caused sanitation problems on farmland and beaches in southern San Diego County for the last 50 years.
