WORLD IN BRIEF : YUGOSLAVIA : Republics Agree to Crisis Summit

Leaders of Yugoslavia’s six feuding republics agreed to hold a crisis summit next week to try to stave off disintegration and civil war. Franjo Tudjman, president of the republic of Croatia, said the eight-member collective presidency decided on the summit at a stormy session to discuss Yugoslavia’s most serious constitutional crisis since World War II. Tudjman said he expects several such summits and that the meetings “could be crucial for the future of Yugoslavia.” Tudjman said the main disagreement was over the role of the army.
