New York Times Laying Off 61 Union Employees: The newspaper also announced that it would offer buyout packages to an unspecified number of non-union employees as a major cost-cutting move. In a memo to the newspaper’s staff, New York Times Publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger said that layoffs were necessitated by the recession and that previous cost-containment measures “in no way made up for the decline in (advertising) revenue” in recent years. New York Times Co. spokeswoman Nancy Nielsen said layoffs would affect business, news and editorial staff in addition to corporate-level employees. No reporters or editors would be let go, she said.
