UCSD Nets Victory Over Emory
Eighth-ranked UC San Diego won four of six singles matches to edge fifth-ranked Emory (Georgia), 5-4, in a nonconference Division III men’s tennis victory in Irvine Friday.
Chris Belloli picked up two victories, first in No. 2 singles, then he teamed with Jeff Beathard for the Triton’s only doubles victory, in the No. 1 slot.
It was the second consecutive victory for UCSD (2-6) over a Division III school.
The University of San Diego blanked Dartmouth, 6-0, in the first round of the USD Invitational Men’s Tournament at USD’s West Courts. Drake beat Navy, 6-2, Yale defeated Iowa State, 5-1, and Iowa beat Pacific, 5-1, in other first-round matches. Jose Luis Noriega defeated Matt Semler, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles as all six Toreros singles players won in straight sets. USD (6-9) will face Yale (1-0) today at 1 p.m. USD’s women’s team, ranked 15th in the country, will host No. 10 Cal at 11 a.m. today.
SOFTBALL
UCSD swept a doubleheader, 3-1 and 9-1 from La Verne in nonconference action at La Verne.
For the Tritons, Lynn Moreno and Pam Harnack were three for eight for the day and Stephanie Molina was three for seven with one RBI.
Kathy Fogg pitched a one-hitter for UCSD (10-3) in the second game. La Verne fell to 5-6-1.
San Diego State’s five-run fourth inning and Karen McCormick’s five hit shutout led the Aztecs to a 10-0 victory over University of San Diego. Shannon Fitzgerald had three singles for SDSU (8-9-1). USD dropped to 7-6. The second game was rained out in the bottom of the second.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Home-town favorite Aaron Harmon from Mt. Carmel won the annual San Diego County Coca-Cola Nike Shoes Slam-N-Jam at Mt. Carmel in a double dunk-off against University City’s Elliott Alexander. Harmon, a 6-foot-2 junior, scored 98 out of a possible 100 on his final dunk, a glide from near the free-throw line while grabbing his ankles behind him.
Alexander, a 6-5 senior, then missed his final dunk. After the final round the two were tied with 193 points each, and each got 97 on their first extra dunk. Kearny’s Darnay Scott finished third (192) and El Camino’s Brian Beck (191) was fourth. Lincoln’s Scott Hammond took fifth.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
After the second day of the NCCA Division III championships in Atlanta, UCSD trails seven-time defending champion Kenyon, 434.5-310, in team standings.
UCSD’s Catherine Capriles set a national record in the 100-yard backstroke. She covered the distance in :57.62. and took third in the 500 freestyle. Christy Parker won the 100 butterfly. Capriles teamed with Jocelyn Rothbard, Sabrina Lum and Jenna Benaszek for a first in the 800 free relay.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Third-ranked SDSU took a 15-12, 15-8, 13-15, 15-10 nonconference victory over Purdue at Peterson Gym to improve to 12-3.
Mike Schlegel and Mike Mattarocci led the Aztecs with 24 and 20 kills, respectively.
