British publishing magnate Robert Maxwell began do-or-die talks with striking Daily News unions in an effort to win a pact that could save the New York tabloid from shutdown . . . The Investment Company Institute reported that the assets of the nation’s 538 money market mutual funds fell $101 million in the week ended March 6 to $468.11 billion.
