Lunker Bass Worthy of Warmer Reception

Is Greg Wittig’s catch of an 8 3/4-pound spotted bass at Riverside County’s Lake Perris Monday a potential world record?

It is. But Wittig couldn’t be reached for comment, and a spokesman at the lake couldn’t get much out of him, other than the fact he was using 10-pound test line.

“I told him he had a shot at line class, but he wasn’t really interested in talking,” Charlie Lamkin said. “He didn’t want to tell anybody where he got it or what he got it on.”

Wittig could be taking the necessary steps to have his catch certified. Or he might have had the fish for dinner.

In any case, the 10-pound line class is open, according to the International Game Fish Assn.’s 1990 record book. The all-tackle record, also from Lake Perris, is two 9-pound 4-ounce fish caught in February and April of 1987.
