WESTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TOURNAMENT : Leveque’s Dazzling Relief Sparks Notre Dame

Cary Wichmann and reliever Chris Leveque combined for 15 strikeouts to lead Notre Dame High to a 5-2 victory over Venice in a Blue Division game of the Westside High School baseball tournament Tuesday at Notre Dame.
Leveque picked up the victory and struck out eight in three innings.
The Gondoliers (0-1) tied the score, 2-2, in the fifth inning, but Notre Dame scored three unanswered runs in the bottom of the inning and held on in its season opener.
With the score tied, 2-2, in the fifth, Francisco Dongo singled and Vinnie Orlando walked. Cesar Martinez followed with a double, scoring Dongo, and Louie Tapia drove in Orlando and Martinez with a double for a 5-2 lead.
Venice took a 1-0 lead in the third inning but the Knights scored twice in the fourth.
In other tournament games:
Taft 2, Buena 1--Michael Krasner struck out six and did not allow an earned run in a four-hit complete-game victory in a Blue Division game.
Stacy Kleiner was two for three with a double and a run-scoring single for Taft.
Kleiner also threw out John Wood attempting to steal third base to end the game.
Ventura 9, Bell-Jeff 2--Four errors fueled Ventura’s five-run fifth inning in a Blue Division game. Bell-Jeff (0-1) committed eight errors.
Alemany 11, Loyola 2--Alemany freshman Bill Scheffels, in his high school pitching debut, struck out eight and surrendered just three singles in a Red Division game at Loyola.
Gabe Villasenor had two doubles and knocked in a run and Kevin Tate added a triple and four runs batted in for the Indians (1-1).
Chaminade 4, Redondo 1--Junior left-hander Ted Corcoran (1-0) threw a three-hitter, struck out 10 and walked two to help the host Eagles (2-0) in a Red Division game. Jason Simmers went two for two for Chaminade, the defending Red Division champion.
Montclair Prep 10, Hamilton 0--The Mounties took advantage of 13 walks and three hit batters to beat Hamilton in a Red Division game at Montclair Prep. The game was halted after six innings because of darkness.
Canyon 7, Chatsworth 6--The Cowboys scored four runs in the top of the seventh to overcome a 4-3 deficit. Eric Hiljus struck out eight in the complete-game victory for Canyon (2-0). Mitch Root had a double and a triple for Chatsworth.
