Dee Dee Jonrowe led several mushers deep into the Alaska Range early, but the top teams in the 1,163-mile Anchorage-to-Nome Iditarod sled dog race were minutes apart at the Rohn Roadhouse checkpoint on the third day of the trek across Alaska.

Jonrowe and her 19-dog team pulled into Rohn, 274 miles from Anchorage, 889 miles from Nome and the seventh of 24 checkpoints between Anchorage and Nome, at 7:15 a.m. Monday. Right behind her were Lavon Barve, 45, a printer from Wasilla, Alaska, and Terry Adkins, 47, a veterinarian from Sand Coulee, Mont.

Racing close behind the leaders were the Iditarod’s only multiple winners, rivals Susan Butcher and Rick Swenson, each seeking an unprecedented fifth victory.
