From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Crews worked to contain and remove an estimated 630,000 gallons of crude oil that leaked from a ruptured pipeline into a field and the Prairie River. Much of the oil settled in a swampy area. A second pool of oil gathered atop the ice-covered river about a quarter-mile from where it emptied Sunday out of a storm sewage drain. The break in the pipeline, which carries crude from Edmonton, Alberta, to Superior, Wis., occurred near Grand Rapids, about 100 miles northwest of Duluth.
